I recently had a conversation with a gentleman who said that he has fluid in his lungs and that he has a difficult time breathing, however despite his doctors using medications and draining fluid from his lungs, they have been unable to stop the fluid production. And while it is definitely important to remove fluid from your lungs, is it always appropriate to intervene medically when someone is suffering with a symptom?
That is the question that all health care professionals need to ask themselves prior to any type of intervention. First Do No Harm is the Hippocratic Oath that all doctors are held to. So, whenever I have a discussion with someone about a concern like the examples above, or any other health concern, my first reaction is to do no harm.
Secondarily, in all of my years of studying medicine, there is one universal truth, or one God truth that I have learned. And that is: the Body Always Does the Right Thing at the Right Time. It is how we were designed by our Creator. If your capillaries harden and become less flexible, your blood pressure rises. If your production of hormones begins to decline, your body makes more cholesterol to try and keep up with the demand for more hormones.
“Above-Down, Inside-Out” is a statement of chiropractic philosophy. It is the original phrase and philosophy of Dr. DD Palmer, who founded chiropractic more than 100 years ago.
What Dr. DD Palmer meant about that statement is that the brain is the control center of the body, it is the “Above.” The control of the body comes from the “Above” then travels “Down” into the entire body on the “Inside” and finally flows to the “Outside.”
It is a very simple phrase born at the turn of the previous century to express a very complex process which refers to the functioning of the nervous system and all its manifestations.
It also reminds us that the human body is an infinitely complex entity that self-adjusts, self-manages and ultimately heals self. It is a principle of life.
I also like to include another meaning to the “Above-Down, Inside-Out” principle. That is that there is a Higher Power that comes from Above, giving and sustaining life Down and Inside-Out. It is my personal religious and philosophical belief that God provides all of the healing that our bodies need to survive and thrive in today's environment. My only job as a doctor, is to remove what is interfering with the bodies ability to heal.
As a wellness consultant and also a chiropractor, I spend my time with patients figuring out what is blocking a persons ability to heal and overcome symptoms and disease. Those blocks could be nutritional (ie. Gluten, GMO, sugar, processed foods, etc.), environmental (ie. Mercury or other heavy metals, toxins, pharmaceuticals, etc.), neurological (ie. stress, accidents, emotional, etc.), or cellular (ie. inflammation, poor oxygenation, etc.). If I can pinpoint the block, and remove the interference, then the body WILL heal itself.
So as you see, I use the principle of “Above-Down, Inside-Out” as a living principle and I use it as my guide in the way in which I approach the human body. Understanding that the human body has within it immense capacity for healing allows me to appreciate my place in the process.
My place is to be a part of the process of healing but not the “Boss” of healing. In fact, did you know that as we age, it is very common and healthy for blood pressure and cholesterol to rise. Studies prove that more people die of cardiovascular disease with their numbers in the "normal" range than they do in the high cholesterol range.
So before you take that next pill or try that next break through medical procedure, ask yourself, "Am I interfering with my bodies ability to heal itself?"
