There are many types of diets out there, more than can be counted on the hand. Diet is by far the hardest thing to get ahold of. Between the long hours at work, taking care of your family, or even studying for exams, it’s hard to make sure to consume a healthy diet. With a keto diet it makes diet easier to keep ahold of. A keto diet is where the body develops ketones & instead of burning sugar for energy it uses fat. Although time is a huge benefit to the keto diet (because you find yourself eating less often thus saving time on meal prep, etc.), there are plenty of other reasons the keto diet is worth a shot. This diet aids in weight loss, increases energy, & of coarse improves eating habits.
Before I get into the benefits of the diet you may be wondering what the diet consists of that makes it so special. The keto diet focuses on getting your body to burn fat rather than sugar. The main goal is to figure out what foods you can have. You want to keep your carbs low, & you want most of your carbs to come from vegetables, fruits, & nuts. The goal for ketosis is 20 grams of carbs. Now I know what your thinking… How am I supposed to live off 20 grams of carbs? Well the difference between eating the fresh vegetables & Fruits is the carbs are less for more. For an example, 100 grams of spinach is only one carb & 100 grams of pasta is 29 carbs. So, you could eat 2,900 grams of spinach in order to equal the amount of pasta just in carbs. This is how the keto diet works, it uses healthy carbs or “good carbs” that the body can use and gets rid of the sugars in the body which forces the body to burn fat for energy.
Now that you know what it consists of let’s talk about how it helps us lose weight. Honestly the answer is right in the definition! It depletes the body of sugar, which causes the body to lower insulin levels (fat storage hormone) and burn fat as its next source of energy. If we are burning off the fat we have in our body, we are going to lose weight. That is why this diet has been so effective for weight loss. Now although this diet is effective there are limitations to doing this diet. People that have diabetes should caution this diet as their body needs some sugar especially those with type one diabetes because they risk hypoglycemia, or since ketones are being produce they risk an extremely elevated level of ketones which causes diabetic ketoacidosis.
We now understand why keto helps us lose weight lets talk about the energy boost. We know that eating healthy is good for our body, but let’s talk about what happens when our body gets used to all that sugar. Our body naturally makes a hormone called insulin. Yes, the same insulin that diabetics take, but this is our body actually making it in our pancreas. So, what happens over time our body gets used to having so much sugar in our system, which increases our demand for insulin to keep our glucose in a normal range. When our body has insulin resistance or a decreased sensitivity our body has a hard time absorbing that energy. So basically, if we focus on eliminating the sugar in our body and increasing that insulin sensitivity our body can break down the fats we have stored. Once we get into the fat adaptive state your body will not feel depleted of energy, because there are constant fat stores in our body.
I don’t have to go over how the keto diet improves our eating habits. As you all know a salad of our favorite low carb vegetables are a lot better then eating a pizza. So not only will you have a cleaner diet, but you will see a big change in how you look and feel.
Luckily, I have devised a variety of meals on our websites that you can choose from. Not all meals are keto friendly. You can read the recipes and eliminate the ones that will not fit the diet.
