Weight loss plateaus are a very common and frustrating issue. When I work with patients who are seemingly doing everything right, but are still struggling to lose weight, there are a few things that I look at to see if we can uncover the root cause as to why they are hitting that weight loss plateau.
Over the course of the next 3 weeks I will uncover some of the most common reasons that people struggle with weight loss and their health.
1. Nutritional Imbalances
You may have heard that food today is no where near the nutritional composition as the food of the 1950's. Due to many factors in farming practices, corporate engineering, EPA regulations and government oversight, our soils have been depleted of many of the essential nutrients that are required for daily human function.
Studies show that American diets fall short in nutrients like magnesium, vitamins A, C, D, and E as well as omega 3 fatty acids. Because vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants, and healthy fats are necessary for a properly functioning body and healthy metabolism, lack of these nutrients lead to a poorly functioning metabolism.
2. Gut Microbiome Imbalances
Your gut houses over 1,000 different species of bacteria and other "invaders". There is approximately 10x's the amount of bacteria in your body than there are cells that actually make up your body. What science has discovered is that these bugs have a significant influence with regards to your health, your weight and your metabolism. In fact, studies have shown that if you take the gut bacteria from skinny mice and transplant those gut bacteria into the digestive tract of fat mice...the fat mice become skinny...without changing it's diet!
You can take steps today to improve your gut bacteria by:
- Eat whole unprocessed, unrefined foods by eliminating sugars and refined carbohydrates and eating more healthy fiber foods.
- Eat 75% of your diet as vegetables and plant based foods.
- Consume healthy fats like omega 3 fatty foods found in Salmon and monounsaturated fats found in extra-virgin olive oil, and healthy saturated fats like coconut milk.
- Add fermented foods like home-made sauerkraut, miso, kimchi, and drinks like Kombucha and Kevita.
- Add fiber rich foods like nuts, seeds, and special fibers to feed your healthy bacteria.
Next week I will cover more reasons behind weight loss plateaus so stay tuned for articles parts 2 and 3.
