  1. Lack of Sleep – We have all heard that it is important to get 7-8 hours of sleep per night, unfortunately many people do not get enough of this precious rest. I suggest that you go to bed around the same time each night and wake up around the same time each morning to keep you on schedule.
  2. Get the Right Fuel – Nothing can zap you of energy faster than getting the right nutrients into your body. Many people have a diet devoid of any quality nutrition. Make certain to eat a balanced diet with many colors from fruits, vegetables, fats and proteins.
  3. Anemia – Iron deficiency anemia is a common cause of fatigue in women and men. Because iron is a component of red blood cells, lack of iron leads to a decrease in RBC’s and thus a decrease in oxygen necessary for cellular function.
  4. Hypothyroidism – The thyroid gland is responsible for many cellular functions in the body and without enough thyroid hormone common symptoms include weight gain, depression, and fatigue.
  5. Dehydration – We all know that water is essential for life, however lack of water can make you feel fatigued. While there is no well reported research into how much water you need on a daily basis, most experts agree to drink between 6-8 8oz glasses per day.
  6. Heart Disease – If the heart is struggling to push blood to all of your vital organs then nutrients and oxygen cannot get to their destination thus leading to symptoms like shortness of breath and fatigue.
  7. Food Sensitivities – Many people suffer from food allergies, but even more people suffer from food sensitivities. The problem with food sensitivities is that it may take hours to days to feel the effects that certain foods may have on your body. If you ever feel sleepy after eating certain foods, then chances are good that you suffer from a food sensitivity. The best way to determine if you are sensitive to certain foods is to do an elimination diet. Remove suspected foods from your diet and if see if you feel an increase in energy. Reintroduce those foods back into your diet, if the fatigue returns, you know that the food may be a cause.
  8. Mitochondrial Damage – Your mitochondria are your cells “power house”. If you eat an unhealthy diet and lack vitamins, minerals and antioxidants then you risk damaging your DNA and your mitochondria. I recommend for patients to use supplements like CoQ10, B-complex and omega-3 fatty acids in addition to other supplements to enhance mitochondrial function.
